Zillow, the leading online marketplace for homes for sale, recently released their 2019 design predictions of what trends are in — and which ones are out. If you have plans to sell your house this year, you may want to take note.
2019 Design Predictions: What’s Out?
Shiplap is starting to stall — and modern, cleaner design is replacing it.
Don’t despair, Joanna Gaines and her farmhouse rustic-chic style aren’t done. But her style — and rustic design as a whole — is evolving into a more modern and polished look.
According to Zillow, millennial pink is out. And if you’re selling your home this year, the color choice may cost you $2,310 on your final sale price. According to a sales report, “Homes with more style-specific colors like brick or raspberry red kitchens sell for $2,310 less than expected.”
Bloggers may love millennial pink, but home buyers are looking for homes featuring classic, more neutral colors like blue bathrooms and light taupe living rooms.
2019 Design Predictions: What’s In
Warm modernism blends modern with small rustic touches that add warmth to the look. You can’t go wrong with the design style. According to the report, “Many regions throughout the U.S. are choosing a modern aesthetic over a rustic style.”
To achieve the look, add elements in your home featuring warm colors, rich fabrics and high-texture natural wall coverings.
Industrial style continues to grow as homeowners and renters gravitate to urban living, utility and simplicity.
Concrete, matte black finishes and bronze accents are the signature elements of industrial design. Denim blue tones and charcoal grays are also the colors of choice for paint and textiles. Don’t be afraid of these darker colors. In an analysis of home sales last year, Zillow found that front doors painted in charcoal gray and black sold for $6,271 more.
Smart home features
Voice-controlled smart home products like Alexa and Google Voice will only get more popular this year. Because they make the daily routine easier, you’ll find more and more smart household products like:
- Smart fans
- Voice-controlled window coverings and appliances
- Smart faucets
A tranquil zen oasis
Although being connected at home through smart home tech is important, homeowners also wish to disconnect from the outside world and find tranquility. Colored LED lights, aromatherapy and acoustic panels that soundproof a space will be popular.
Additionally, handmade details like hardware and surfaces add a softer, more personal touch and the appearance of a higher price tag. Imperfect hand stitching, knobby hand-knit textiles and rugs, hammered metals and hand-painted or hand-hewn surfaces top the list.
