Artistic wall design has become a huge trend in homes over the years. From geometric patterns to realistic art, statement walls fit into just about any home style. Using either paint or wallpaper, a good design adds dimension to a room through a point of interest. One of the best ways to take advantage of this statement wall trend is to incorporate forest scene walls.

Forest scene walls don’t have to be just about the trees. Whether you’re going for a natural vibe in your home or something more artistic, there are several ways to pull off the idea depending on the home style and overall room function. Read on to find out how versatile forest scene walls can be.

Forest Scene Walls Subtle Accent Wall

Painted forest scenes can make subtle accent walls. Image: Waypoint Living Spaces

Use subtle tones in forest scene walls

Forest scene walls don’t have to dominate a space. For a more subtle look, choose a blue and gray color scheme. This style allows you to incorporate the look into a clean, modern design. The gray is a solid neutral that goes with anything. Meanwhile, the light blue works with many shades, easily complementing other accent walls or furniture. The photo above demonstrates how the gray and blue of the forest were worked into the rest of the space with gray cabinets and a blue wall by the stairs.

Forest Scene Walls Realistic Dining Room

A full wall of realistic wallpaper heightens the feeling of being outdoors. Image: Wallpapered

Choose realism in an eating space

For a bolder look, go realistic in your forest scene walls. The space above combines crisp forest scene wallpaper with a modern kitchen. The wallpaper is so lifelike, the shelving appears to float.

What makes this space work so well is that the wallpaper is part of an eating area, giving the illusion that dining takes place right outside in nature. The fact that the wallpaper stretches into the kitchen adds a surreal look, too. It’s a good design choice if you’re looking to bring the outdoors inside while getting creative with a space.

Forest Scene Walls Basement Workout Space

Breathe some life into a basement with realistic forest scenes. Image: Cezign

Bring an outdoor scene to an indoor workout

Realistic forest scene walls also work surprisingly well in basements. The challenge with decorating basements is that they tend to be cut off from the outside, typically devoid of windows. To get around this issue, it’s possible to bring a sense of natural beauty to a basement through the use of forest scene walls.

The photo above shows how effective the concept is in workout spaces. While running, lifting or stretching, the nature trail wall art emulates an outdoor workout. It’s a great idea for areas with long winters, where working out outside isn’t an option for many months out of the year.

Forest Scene Walls Abstract Nursery

A nursery is a fun place for more abstract forest scenes. Image: Jen Talbot Design

Get abstract for a child’s bedroom

Forest scene walls work well in a nursery, since those tend to embrace more fun, artistic designs. Choosing an abstract tree design, like in the photo above, gives the area a sense of whimsy and playfulness befitting a nursery. Using three-dimensional elements like the birds adds a fun touch. You can also work the forest feel into the rest of the room, as with the owl statue on the dresser.

There are countless other ways to get creative with your nursery tree design. For instance, try using brightly colored abstract tree designs or painting wildlife in the forest scene. Or, for a fun twist, design the trees so that the branches appear to support floating shelving.

Forest Scene Walls Classic Bedroom

An adult space can buck the realism trend with forest scenes. Image: Veronica Martin Design Studio

Go artsy in the bedroom

A forest scene can also take an artsy twist in an adult space, as in the room above. Adding elements like clouds, birds and hot air balloons keeps the space looking whimsical —  particularly when those elements border surrealism, like the oversized butterfly above.

However, using a grounded color scheme helps update the idea for a more classic or adult space. The color scheme above veers toward neutral shades with pops of pink, which matches the drapes. It goes to show how well forest scene walls can also be incorporated to match the rest of the space.

Whether you choose hyper-realistic wallpaper or more abstract statement wall paintings, forest scene walls are a surefire way to make any room in your home more interesting. All it takes is a little creativity, planning and color coordination. Which of these walls is your favorite? Let us know in the comments!

cb2's modern planter - zen

CB2’s modern planter line includes interesting shapes in classic colors, like these Zen planters.

We hope you like the products we recommend. Just so you are aware, Freshome may collect a share of sales from the links on this page.

We’re loving the houseplant trend. What’s better than surrounding yourself with lush, affordable decor that will only get more impressive with time and will help keep your air clean? It’s no surprise that plants are in style. Whether you’re just starting to test your green thumb or have a veritable jungle at home, CB2’s modern planter line has something for you. Its sleek new planters will help you transform your home garden into a work of art.

If you’re still using terra cotta pots for all of your plants, CB2’s here to upgrade you. Its unique planters deliver clean lines, classic colors (that aren’t earthen brown!) and a wide variety of sizes and shapes. Maybe you’re looking for a small but stunning home for your desk plant, or maybe you’re envisioning a largescale way to build a whole wall of green. Either way, CB2’s modern planter line has you covered. Here are just a few of their planter options to help you start dreaming up your ideal houseplant collection.

cb2's modern planter - olly

The Olly can double as a table or storage until you’re ready to plant.

The Olly planter

Interested in getting a new plant but want to take your time in picking the perfect one? Grab the Olly planter. When empty, it can double as a table or storage thanks to its flat top. It’s a low-pressure way to try growing. If your plant dies, you can empty it out and use it to hold blankets or fill it with ice and use it as a cooler. You won’t feel pressed to re-fill it until you’re ready since it will get so much use regardless of whether or not it’s holding plants.

The Olly was designed by Mermelada Estudio and is made from a durable fiberglass and polyester resin blend. Overwaterers, rejoice! It comes with a drainage hole.

cb2's modern planter - blox

Blox planters come in a huge range of sizes and shapes.

Blox planters

If you want to jump on the houseplant bandwagon but don’t necessarily want to spend hours filling a bunch of pots, look to the Blox planter line. It comes in a variety of sizes, including a 32″ by 16″ by 16″ rectangular planter. Fill this single box and you’ve got enough greenery to transform a wall. As an added bonus, this planter is sizable enough that you can use it outdoors to create barriers in your yard. A few of these Bloxes is enough to establish a foliage-filled faux wall between the pool and barbecue areas.

Whether you want a narrow planter for your citrus tree or a squat one for your succulents, you’ll be able to find it. Blox planters are available in high-gloss white or matte charcoal. Both colors are powder-coated galvanized steel, which means they’ll hold up outdoors. Like most of CB2’s modern planter options, Blox planters come with a drainage hole.

cb2's modern planter - nile

Add elegance to your houseplants with the handblown glass Nile planter.

Nile glass planter

Many planters are sturdy and heavy-looking. That’s great for outdoor planting where you’re up against the elements, but you can opt for something more elegant indoors. The Nile planter is a perfect example. The handblown soda lime glass ripples with colors of rose quartz and terra cotta, balancing a natural feel with chic airiness. Because each Nile planter is handblown, no two are the same.

Again, this planter is ideal for the person who thinks they are ready for a houseplant but might want some time to prepare. Because it’s such a unique vessel, it’s a perfect storage container for blankets or pillows while it awaits its green friend.

More of CB2’s modern planter line

Love the houseplant trend but don’t want to bother with the upkeep? CB2’s modern planter line has a hack for you; check out this faux fiddle leaf fig tree.

Feeling inspired? Don’t stop here. The full planter line is pretty impressive and definitely worth checking out. Plus, CB2 was kind enough to provide some planting tips to get you started. We’d love to hear about your houseplant plans below. Photography by CB2.

Planning to build a home may leave you equal parts excited and overwhelmed. Building means making hundreds of choices on the way to your move-in date. The first, of course, is the type of home you’ll build. Architectural style is almost as unique as the families that live within the home, so it’s a deeply personal decision. Good design is the combination of two factors: aesthetics and function. Find the perfect balance between what looks great and what works for your family, and you’ve got a dream home in the works.

Not sure where to start? Understanding the most common architectural styles helps you narrow down your choices. With a general style in mind, your architect can create the perfect plan. Here are some of the most common styles and what makes them stand the test of time.

architectural style cape cod

Cape Cods are simple but charming. Image: Elaine M. Johnson Landscape Design

Cape Cod

If affordability is on your mind, a simple Cape Cod style might be the right fit. Cape Cod homes are pretty simple: They’re usually rectangular with open floor plans. The main living area consists of a kitchen and living room, with a few bedrooms off of the main space. Cape Cod homes are easy to maintain, with wood as the main material. On the outside, steep gables and symmetrical lines offer a simple look with plenty of curb appeal.

architectural style craftsman

As the name suggests, Craftsman homes showcase craftsmanship. Image: Curtis Design Group

Craftsman

If you love a home with charm and character, a Craftsman home is perfect for you. Craftsman homes focus heavily on the little features that make a home unique. Gorgeous woodwork, handmade railings and exposed beams give Craftsman homes a warm, cozy vibe. And their characteristic open floor plans mean they’re a great choice for families. Typically made with wood materials, craftsman homes are bright, natural and simple.

architectural style modern

Clean lines allow the landscape to shine in the modern architectural style. Image: Forsite Studio

Modern/prairie

Clean lines and sophisticated style set modern and prairie homes apart. Ideal for the eco-conscious family, modern homes let the landscape be the star. Expect flat roofs and clean lines with little in the way of woodwork. Modern homes often feature glass and tile, along with sustainable materials and energy sources. Large, open indoor spaces allow for plenty of natural light. It’s an uncluttered, streamlined approach to design that appeals to the unfussy individual.

architectural style colonial

Symmetry is vital for Colonial architectural style. Image: Schoss Construction

Colonial

There’s something nostalgic about a traditional home, and Colonial design gives you that classic look. The architectural style has been around since the 1600s, so it doesn’t rely on ever-changing trends. Instead, it’s about solid construction and symmetrical architecture. Evenly spaced windows, shutters and porches stand out in Colonial homes. This is made easier by keeping the home rectangular, with simple square rooms inside. It’s an ideal fit for a family that values classic style over flashy trends.

architectural style french

French style is perfect for the stone-lover. Image: Isler Homes

French Provincial

Fancy a stroll through the French countryside? That’s the sentiment behind French Provincial architecture. American homeowners love the grand feel of French homes, which have gained popularity in the last decade. Large features like oversized fireplaces, luxurious bathrooms and gorgeous gardens offer plenty of space without sacrificing on style. Matching windows accent tall ceilings, and stone is the material of choice both inside and outside.

architectural style farmhouse

Look for unfussy design and open spaces in farmhouse architectural style. Image: Stephanie Gamble Interiors

Farmhouse

Farmhouse style is having a moment, and for good reason. As a highly functional design style, it allows homeowners to have their cake and eat it too. Farmhouse homes are highly stylized, with exposed beams and shabby chic finishes. The actual architecture, however, is pretty simple: large, open rooms. This allows growing families to enjoy their space in an unfussy home meant for living. Favoring function over design, farmhouse style offers more livable space and a casual aesthetic.

architectural style ranch

Ranch homes are affordable and accessible. Image: Bailey Draper Custom Homes

Ranch

One of the most cost-effective architectural styles, ranch design usually means efficient layouts. Since most ranch-style homes are one-story, flow and lifestyle are two important things to consider. Ranch homes are perfect for families that require more accessibility, and the one-floor layout gives easy access to the outdoors. What’s more, most ranch homes include large attached garages, so they’re a tinkerer’s dream. With open floor plans, they’re also good empty nester homes.

Choosing an architectural style isn’t just about what looks nice. It requires careful consideration of everything from your family size to your lifestyle and budget. Talk to your architect about your needs, wants and style inspiration. Together, you can choose a design style that works for a home that’s really meant for the way you live.

Have you identified which type of architectural style appeals to you most? Tell us all about it below!

Variety has done some super sleuthing to discover that Oprah Winfrey just spent $8.275 million on a private estate on Orcas Island, Washington. Orcas Island is between Seattle and Vancouver in the San Juan Islands archipelago.

Oprah’s new compound, named Madroneagle Estate by the seller, features two waterfront parcels totaling 43 acres and 3,000 feet of shoreline.

There are several structures including a tea house (shown on the left), the main house featuring four bedrooms, three full bathrooms and two half bathrooms (shown on the right), a large barn with a gym, a woodworking studio and yoga studio and a large guest house on the cliff overlooking the bay.

Rustic craftsman in style, the three-story main residence is 7,303 square feet of oasis. Stone facing, rustic timber accents and a copper and slate roof add to the charm of the home.

The landscaping and exterior structures are inspired by a Japanese botanical garden.

Because the compound is private, glass doors and windows are featured throughout.

The main house great room flows into the outdoor patios, dining room and kitchen. The interior features rustic cabin details like reclaimed woods and hand-forged ironwork throughout. There’s a nod to Oprah’s hometown – the wood floors come from the old Sears building in Chicago.

The builders mixed and matched wood tones and reclaimed wood species in the home.

The large kitchen features soaring ceilings with large timber beams and a wood-burning oven.

The game room offers enough space and entertainment for Oprah’s entourage.

Oprah’s master bedroom has breathtaking water and island views.

The bathroom features a large antique clawfoot tub and original art from the indigenous peoples of the Northwest.

The rustic-chic laundry room features plenty of counter space for folding.

A patio that leads out to the beautiful surroundings is perfect for alfresco dining.

A path from the main house leads to the serene tea house with sweeping views of the islands.

Lilac has unseated Millennial Pink as the most exciting pastel for our homes, and we couldn’t be happier. While pastel pink can be a soothing addition to a contemporary color palette, lilac and lavender are more versatile and easy to use. Once thought of as nostalgic and sentimental, today’s lilac works wonderfully in contemporary spaces with clean lines and simple decor, and in rustic spaces with a simple color palette.  Painting is an easy and quick way to introduce a new color to your home when you’re ready to decorate with lilac. Here are six on-trend lilac paint colors we love:

Six paint colors you’ll want to try

  • Glidden Paint: Lilac Lattice
This saturated lilac is perfect for an accent wall or ceiling.
  • PPG Paints: Violet Verbena
The 2017 Color of the Year.
  • Sherwin-Williams HGTV Collection: Euphoric Lilac
Bold and energetic, this lilac is a great choice for contemporary spaces.
  • Benjamin Moore: French Lilac
A classic lilac with soft elegance.
  • Glidden Paint: Quaint Purple Rose
Saturated and soft violet just right for a guest bedroom.
  • Magnolia Home Paints: In Bloom
This is a soft and dusty lavender that’s perfect for modern farmhouse or rustic style spaces.

Here are the secrets to decorating with lilac:

Not sure how to incorporate lilac into your home’s color palette? The secret to incorporating this hue into your color palette is to play up its blue undertones. Pastel purple and violet can take the place of blue in most color schemes and in a variety of styles. Lilac is not just for bedrooms and bathrooms; using it as a pop of color in the back of cabinets and bookshelves can give you some of that lilac style without a big commitment. Here are some stylish ways to bring lilac into your space:

1. Style a bathroom

lilac bathroom inspiration

Lilac is a natural for your bathroom. With soft white trim and fixtures, lilac can give any style bathroom a clean and fresh look. If you’ve chosen lilac paint for your bathroom walls, you have several options for accent colors. The most popular color palette for a lilac bathroom includes accessories in green, yellow or gray. Brushed nickel bath fixtures work best with lilac and lavender, but oil-rubbed bronze fixtures complement a traditional style bathroom.

2. Add color to rustic decor

lilac farmhouse kitchen

It’s easy to love the pastel colors that have found their way into rustic and modern farmhouse decorating. Lilac can join the muted pastels that offer rustic rooms options beyond white walls. The most-muted lilac and lavender works best with rustic decor. A pale pastel can highlight metal fixtures and wood architectural features without the stark contrast white creates.

3. Incorporate black and white

Decorating with lilac is not just for soft color palettes. In a small room, lilac gives just the right touch of color with a black and white color palette without overwhelming it. You’ll want to choose one of the more saturated lilacs, or even a soft violet, to match the crispness of black and white to achieve visual balance.

4. Enhance your curb appeal

lilac front door

Enhance your home’s curb appeal with a lilac front door. Image: Kelly Webbter, Designer

There’s a good chance that you already have lilac and lavender in your front yard since they’re some of the most popular flowering plants. Lilac can improve your home’s curb appeal because of its relationship to your green foliage. In color theory, green and purple, along with orange, are part of a Triadic color scheme.  This means a scheme with three colors that are equally distanced on the color wheel. The Triadic scheme definitely has contrast, but you can soften it with one dominant color, like green, and use lilac and orange as accents.  Your curb appeal palette could be your green foliage, lilac front door and flowers, and an autumn orange bench.

5. Embrace contemporary décor

decorating a lilac living room

The easiest way to add lilac to your contemporary rooms is with accessories. There’s no need to make major changes if you’d just like to freshen up your room with a pop of color. New throw pillows, a rug, and artwork may be all your space needs for a new look. Lilac and lavender can be used in place of blue in most color schemes, but also looks wonderful with royal and navy blue.

6. Dress up your guest room

lilac bedroom decorating

Your guest room could be the perfect space for lilac if you’d like to give the color a test drive without a big commitment. Lilac is a soothing color, and suitable for guests of all ages. Lilac bedding and artwork may be all that’s needed to update your guest bedroom. If you have an adjacent guest bath, consider new wall color to coordinate with your guest bedroom accents for a ‘suite’ vibe.

7. Paint an accent wall

Accent walls can be painted in any room of your home, but we love the look of a lilac bedroom wall showing off a beautiful headboard. Lilac paired with wood tones is both sophisticated and romantic. Any wall in your room can be an accent wall, either to highlight an architectural feature or to fake one with a headboard or large piece of furniture.
